Duckson Garage: Porsche 911 SC [ARCHIVED]

The 911.

When it comes to dream cars, this one trumps and triumphs over all. But they are normally just that – a dream. The 911 sits at a lofty height of automotive prowess, price inflation and relative rarity that can seem like that dream is put on the top shelf – looked at from afar but never to be taken down. The price is the only limiting factor, turning a dream into a nightmare (or just, you know… a bad dream).

Then comes the SC.

A true P-car in every sense, and without doubt a thoroughbred 911, it escapes from the pack in price. This tastefully modified example is asking just shy of $70k. With ‘only’ a 3.0L flat-six (instead of the comparable 3.2L 911’s of the era) and a slightly inferior transmission, its unwarranted lower perceived value is to be thanked as it pretty much halves the entry price into the Stuttgart Elites Club.

This car is more than badge prestige and fancy clubs though – it’s a true drivers car.

Fantastic handling, flat-six engine note, power and torque that is linear and responsive.

This particular example isn’t noteworthy, in that I would buy any Porsche 911 if I could. However, it is in good, modified yet period correct condition – new black-on-black paint, Fuchs three-piece wheels wrapped in huge 275 tires, targa roof, ducktail spoiler, racing harness and what looks like a revised gearbox (solving the original cars transmission criticism). I like it. A lot. The Weekly Car goes to the Porsche 911 SC for being a good 911, a great Porsche and a fantastic drivers car.

Note: After all that talk of price, I still am looking for someone to lend me $68,000.
