Again? Another Porsche? Another 944?
I genuinely want to buy this car, that’s why.
I’ve already described the ins-and-outs of the 944 in the previous article, so will rather indulge in emotion rather than logic.
It’s the four cylinder sparring partner to the first-gen RX7 (a personal favourite), with both looking and feeling quite similar despite complete different engine types. There is a chicken-egg scenario on who copied who, but either way the international homework copying brought two fantastic cars. It has a long sloping bonnet punctuated by pop-ups and a badge. A Porsche badge. This does mean it walks in the shadow of the 911 – sharing some of the unpinning parts and ethos, whilst remaining severely undervalued. This is good for us, as this example comes in at $15,000 (a bargain basement price for this car, let alone condition).
$15k for a proper sports coupe from Germany, in fantastic condition with Martini livery – what more could you want?
It’s also sort of the amalgamation of many personal cars of mine. It has the 2.5L just like my own Mazda3, it has the go-kart handling and overall feel of my Mazda MX5, it has the looks of an RX7 FB, and the rest is from the spare parts bin of the 911. It’s a serious medley of my favourite and personal cars and that’s why it’s in the Duckson Garage.
